WATCH: Amy Schumer Learns To Cook

At last a funny cooking show that appeals to those who enjoy cooking and those who don’t. I fall in the later bucket, as I see it as an essential task to get food on the table for my family, but I don’t necessarily enjoy it. My part is more like the role that Amy plays in the kitchen, someone who enjoys making cocktails and assisting her husband as his sous chef.

Amy Schumer Learns to Cook is a new cooking show starring comedian and actor Amy Schumer and her husband, chef Chris Fischer on the Food Network. The combination of Amy’s quick wit, Chris’s know-how and the homely setting in Martha’s Vineyard creates the kind of comfort TV we need right now. Some of the TV shows recorded during quarantine especially talk shows have felt flat without the energy of a lively audience. The lack of creativity while grasping to the original format of these shows have felt like an entertainment let down. Do we feel joy from watching Ellen hosting her TV show as a Zoom call (with her annoying producer Andy peering through the window) after spending a day on Zoom meetings?

Amy Schumer Learns To Cook is a funny, good natured show shot with two remote cameras (not Zoom with its delays) set up in their kitchen and a third hand held camera operated by their live-in nanny.

The easy to make meals with plenty of ingredient alternatives offers some helpful ideas on what to rustle up.

The show acknowledges both the simple pleasures of togetherness and the balancing act of couples coexisting in a shared space. At the end of the first episode, Chris mentions how taking time to create something with our hands and learning something new is a helpful way to get through this time. Even though I am not the main cook in my house, my favorite time of day is being in the kitchen making dinner together…with a drink in hand, music playing and plenty of humor.

In the absence of the ultimate comfort TV show, The Great British Baking Show (Bake Off in the U.K), I thank you Amy Schumer for filling the void and connecting with your audience while connecting with your husband!
